Children Education Allowance (CEA) is a reimbursement benefit available to eligible Central Government employees for the education of their children. For a full 12-month period, this is equivalent to ₹33,750 per child, subject to eligibility and departmental claim rules.

2. Hostel Subsidy

Maximum rate: ₹8,437.50 per month per child

Hostel Subsidy is not automatically a fixed ₹8,437.50 payment. The reimbursable amount is:

₹8,437.50 per month OR actual eligible boarding and lodging expenditure, whichever is lower.

For 12 eligible months, the maximum ceiling can therefore reach ₹1,01,250 per child, provided actual admissible boarding and lodging expenses support the claim.

3. CEA for Divyang Children

Children Education Allowance for a Divyang child is payable at double the normal CEA rate, currently ₹5,625 per month.

The Government issued additional clarifications during 2026 to remove ambiguity around Children Education Allowance eligibility.

CEA Is Available for Three Classes Before Class I

CEA is admissible for children studying in three classes before Class I, in addition to Classes I to XII. The Department of Posts' April 2026 clarification specifically addresses the three pre-primary classes before Class I.

LKG
UKG

can qualify, subject to the applicable government rules and recognition requirements.

CEA Continues Up to Class XII

CEA and Hostel Subsidy are generally admissible for eligible children studying from the three classes before Class I through Class XII.

‍Home-Based schooling: Reimbursement is permitted for schooling received at home if a Divyang child's handicap prevents them from attending school.

Do not confuse Central Government CEA reimbursement with the Children Education Allowance exemption under income-tax rules. They are different benefits with different limits.

The Income-tax Rules, 2026 came into force on 1 April 2026. Rule 280 specifies ₹3,000 per month per child for Children Education Allowance, while the corresponding hostel allowance limit is ₹9,000 per month per child, subject to the prescribed conditions.

For income earned up to 31 March 2026, the earlier Rule 2BB limits continue to be relevant: ₹100 per month per child for Children Education Allowance and ₹300 per month per child for Hostel Allowance, for up to two children.
