E85 Fuel Explained: Meaning, E20 Difference, Price and Government Clarification

E85 is a high-ethanol gasoline mixture engineered primarily for flex-fuel vehicles. It consists of 80–85% ethanol and 14–19% gasoline. Typical gasoline-powered cars, bikes, and regular E20-compatible vehicles cannot use E85. The government has assured that old gasoline vehicles will continue to run normally on regular gasoline or E20 fuel.

What is E85 Fuel?

E85 is a renewable, high-ethanol fuel—using 80 to 85 percent ethanol and 14 to 19 percent gasoline. Thus, the two fuels are vastly different because of the increased use of ethanol in E85.

The Government of India introduced & commenced the introduction of E85 fuel as part of their initiative on World Environment Day 2008 to promote cleaner burning and the development of alternative fuels in an effort to reduce dependence upon oil by providing environmentally friendly alternatives for future transportation fuel sources.

E85 was created to assist in reducing air quality problems, as well as reducing crude oil imports to India; providing positive economic impacts by stimulating the growth of the ethanol industry in India and providing long-term energy security for India.

E85 vs E20 Fuel: What is the Difference?

The main difference between E20 and E85 is the amount of ethanol mixed with petrol.

E20 is suitable for vehicles designed to handle up to 20% ethanol blending. E85, however, is meant only for specially designed flex-fuel vehicles because it has a much higher ethanol concentration.

Can Normal Petrol Cars use E85 Fuel?

There's no chance for a conventional petrol car to run on E85.

Standard petrol vehicles designed for E20 use cannot function on such a highly concentrated (85%) ethanol blend. E85 requires additional engine parts, fuel lines, sensors and fuel-management systems able to handle high concentrations of an ethanol mixture.

It’s for this reason that E85 can only be used with flex-fuel vehicles (FFV’s).

Will Old Petrol Vehicles Stop Working?

Hardeep Singh Puri, Secretary of the Union Petroleum Ministry, has made it clear that there is no problem with using E85 fuel in older petroleum vehicles.

E85 and E20 are two separate fuel categories: E85 is meant for flex-fuel cars only and will not be used for normal petrol and E20 compatible vehicles.

As a result, existing petrol vehicles running on E20 and normal petrol will operate as they do now.

Is E85 Replacing Petrol in India?

E85 is not to replace petrol in India.

The govt says this means that they are not going to stop selling regular petrol (and/or E20), just that they are going to provide another type of fuel, E85, for a few types of vehicles.

To ensure that only E85-compliant vehicles use E85 fuel, there will be signs at E85 fuel pumps that say “E85-compliant cars only.” This way, normal vehicles do not accidentally drive up to and fill up with E85 fuel.

What Happens if E85 is Filled into a Normal Petrol Car?

If gasoline combustion engines are fueled with E85 gasoline, which contains a much higher amount of ethanol than is normally found in standard gas, the performance of these engines may be affected.

Starting difficulties, engine hesitation while operating, reductions in power, fuel system failure, and long-term effects on parts not made to operate with ethanol may be some of the performance problems related to E85.

For this reason, gasoline-powered vehicle owners should only use the type of fuel specified by their vehicle's manufacturer.

Why is India Promoting E85 Fuel?

The use of E85 fuel in India is supported because it helps lessen fuel requirements from external sources and helps promote better environmental quality through improved transportation options.

According to estimates from the Indian government, the use of E85 will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by almost 61% relative to traditional fuels.

The ethanol industry supports agriculture, as it is made from plant-based materials, including sugar and other crops.

The government says higher ethanol usage can help India in four major ways:

Reduce crude oil import dependence
Lowering vehicular emissions
Increase farmers’ income through ethanol production
Improve long-term energy security

E85 Fuel Price in India

The government is attempting to promote E85 fuel by offering it at a lower price than standard petrol. Reports claim that E85 can be found at a price point nearly ₹20 cheaper than petrol.

Currently in Delhi, E85 is being sold for ₹82.12.

This lower price really only benefits those with flex-fuel vehicles. If you own a standard petrol vehicle, you are advised not to make the switch to E85 just to pay less at the pump.

What are Flex-Fuel Vehicles?

Flex-fuel vehicles can operate on a wider range of ethanol-petrol fuel blends, typically E20 to E100.

With systems that account for the ethanol level in the fuel, these vehicles can function on E85 in a way that standard gasoline vehicles cannot.

To help Indian nationals reduce their consumption of fossil fuels, the Indian government is implementing native flex-fuel vehicles.

Are other countries using E85 or High-Ethanol Fuel?

Brazil has had mainstream ethanol as a fuel option since the 1970s. They have built a great deal of infrastructure for high-level ethanol blends. In Brazil, manufacturers of automobiles are building cars for high-blended ethanol fuel.

India has made progress toward adopting high-level ethanol fuels; however, this effort will require time to accomplish. Currently, there are no plans for E85 to be available outside of vehicles built for use with flex-fuel gasoline (FFV).

Should Petrol Vehicle Owners be Worried?

No, petrol vehicle owners do not need to worry.

E85 is not compulsory, and it is not replacing regular petrol. It is only for E85-compliant flex-fuel vehicles.

If you own a petrol car, bike or E20-compatible vehicle, you can continue using the fuel recommended by your vehicle manufacturer.
