Well, that would seem to be good, would it not? Well, would it actually be? You attempt to take a deeper look. You had put in only your savings of 2000/- to initiate your business, while your friend had put in 10,000/- of theirs. You had made just as much money as your friend. You were clearly the winner. You earned a 50% return, while your friend only earned 10%. In this big, huge, crazy world of business, we use a metric called Return on Equity, or ROE, to find out who is winning that efficiency race. It tells you, with exact precision, how much profit a company generates for every rupee (or dollar) that shareholders have invested.

The Core Formula: Return on Equity (ROE)

Calculating ROE is actually quite simple once you know which two numbers to look for. You can find both of these on a company’s annual or quarterly financial reports.

The Basic ROE Formula:

Return on Equity (ROE) = Net IncomeShareholders' Equity 100

Net Income: This is the “bottom line” profit found on the Income Statement. It is the money left over after all taxes, interest, and expenses are paid.
