What is SWIFT Code
SWIFT stands for Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication. A SWIFT code (or BIC) is a unique 8 or 11-character code used to identify banks and financial institutions globally for international money transfers.
The SWIFT code is made up of four parts:
- The first four characters represent the bank code.
- The next two characters represent the country code.
- The next two characters represent the location code.
- The last three characters (optional) represent the branch code.
For example, WIAUBEB1 is the SWIFT code for Winterthur Assurances in Brussels, Belgium. SWIFT codes are used for secure international bank transfers.
